Six of Swords
01. Upright Meaning
The Six of Swords shows a ferryman poling a small boat across calm water toward a distant shore. A woman and child huddle at the prow, their backs to us; six swords stand upright in the front of the boat. The water on their side is rough; the water toward the distant shore is calm. This is one of the most healing cards in the Swords suit: the worst is behind you and you are being carried toward calmer conditions. The swords in the boat represent the mental burdens you are still carrying — the memories, the grief, the lessons from what you have survived. They come with you, but you are moving away from the turbulence. This is the card of transition, of necessary movement from one phase of life to another, of the quiet relief that comes after surviving something difficult. You are not there yet, but you are moving in the right direction.
02. Reversed Meaning
Reversed, the Six of Swords suggests resistance to a necessary transition — you know you need to move on but cannot bring yourself to leave. The boat is there; the ferryman is waiting; but you stand on the shore. It can also indicate returning to a place you left for good reason, or carrying burdens from the past that no longer need to travel with you.
03. Love
In love, this card signals moving on from a relationship that has ended — the emotional passage from grief toward acceptance and eventually openness again. If you are in a relationship, a difficult chapter is behind you and calmer waters are ahead. The turbulence was real, but you navigated it together and stronger bonds have formed as a result.
04. Career
At work, the Six of Swords indicates leaving behind a toxic work environment, a failed venture, or a role that was diminishing you. The move is right. You may not have full clarity about the destination yet — but departure from what was harmful is itself progress. The ferryman knows the route even when you cannot see the shore clearly.
05. Advice
Allow yourself to be carried. You do not have to row this stretch of water alone. Accept the transition. Look toward the calmer shore rather than back at the turbulence. You are bringing everything you need with you. The swords are there in the boat — the lessons will come. The storm is already behind you.
