Seven of Swords

deceptionstrategystealthcunningevasion

01. Upright Meaning

The Seven of Swords depicts a figure slipping away from a military encampment carrying five swords, glancing back furtively at the two swords left behind. This is the trickster card — strategic cunning, evasion, and sometimes outright deception. The figure is not operating in the open. They are taking what they can carry and leaving the rest, unwilling to face the camp directly. This card warns of someone operating with hidden motives, stealing credit, withholding crucial information, or playing a game behind a social mask. It may also counsel strategic thinking in situations where direct confrontation would be unwise — sometimes the clever move is the indirect one. The question is whether the strategy crosses into dishonesty, and whether the short-term gain is worth the long-term cost to trust and reputation.

02. Reversed Meaning

Reversed, the Seven of Swords brings hidden things to light. Deceptions are being exposed, confessions are being made, or you are finally confronting someone whose actions have been dishonest. This can be a relief after prolonged suspicion. It can also indicate self-deception — lies you have been telling yourself about your own motivations.

03. Love

In love, this card warns of dishonesty — secrets being kept, a partner who is not fully showing up as who they claim to be, or the uneasy feeling that something important is being withheld. Trust your instincts. The thing you cannot quite name may be exactly what it seems. Alternatively, you may be withholding important information from a partner.

04. Career

At work, watch for a colleague or competitor operating with hidden motives — stealing credit, leaking information, or positioning themselves deceptively. Protect your work and your ideas. Document important conversations. This card can also counsel strategic thinking: sometimes the politically savvy approach is to avoid direct confrontation.

05. Advice

Decide whether you are the one with the swords or the one who has been robbed. If someone is deceiving you, trust what you sense even before you have proof. If you are the one being strategically indirect, ask honestly whether your approach is clever or simply dishonest. The distinction matters enormously.
